Choosing which notifications you get
The categories, the channels each can use, and why email works differently from push.
Choosing which notifications you get
Settings → Notifications controls what reaches you and how. This page is about choosing; if nothing is arriving at all, start with I'm not getting notifications instead.
Categories
Notifications are grouped by what they're about — messages, matches and likes, activity on your posts, and account or security notices. Each category is separate, so you can keep the ones you care about and silence the rest.
Channels
A category can reach you by push, in-app, email, and in some cases WhatsApp or SMS. Each is toggled per category, so "email me about messages but don't push them" is a perfectly ordinary setup.
What you can't turn off
Security and account notices always go through. If someone signs into your account, or your account is scheduled for deletion, you'll be told — that isn't marketing, and switching it off would leave you unable to notice a problem.
Promotional messages
Anything promotional is off unless you turn it on. We don't opt you in by default, and every marketing email carries a one-click unsubscribe in the header as well as a link in the footer.
Turning things off doesn't lose them
Silencing a category doesn't stop the thing happening — messages still arrive, likes still land. You just aren't interrupted, and you'll see them next time you open the app.
Per-device behaviour
Push is per device. A new phone starts fresh: sign in and open the app once to register it. Your category choices follow your account, so you only choose once.
