How discovery works — the map, distance filters, who you're shown, and how to change it.
Finding people
Ontryst leads with who's actually around you, rather than an endless deck to swipe.
The home screen
Home shows a map of people near you, with quick filters across the top:
- all — everyone matching your preferences
- live now — people broadcasting right now
- distance — tighten or widen the radius
Tapping a filter applies it immediately. It doesn't open your preferences, so you can move between "just nearby" and "wider" without losing your place.
Who you're shown
Discovery is built from your preferences — age range, distance, and who you're looking to meet — crossed with who's discoverable near you. Change them in Settings → Preferences.
If discovery feels empty, it's usually one of three things:
- Your radius is small and there aren't many people in it yet.
- Your age range is narrow.
- Location isn't available, so we can't tell who's near you. Check that location permission is granted to Ontryst in your phone's settings.
Location
Distance comes from your device location. If you deny location access, Ontryst can't place you and discovery has very little to work with.
You control how precisely your distance is shown to others in Settings → Visibility — see Privacy and visibility.
Being found
Discovery runs both ways: people find you the same way you find them. If you're not appearing to anyone, check that you're discoverable in Settings → Visibility, and that your profile has photos — an empty profile gets skipped.
The feed
Alongside the map, the feed shows what people are posting. It's a second way to find someone: reacting to a post is often a more natural opening than arriving cold on a profile. See Posts and stories.
